NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Police on Long Island have made an arrest in a brutal attack on a woman in an elevator.

Police say that it happened in the early morning hours of Saturday, Apr. 20, 2013.

Police say that Daniel J. Fuentes, 26, of Hempstead followed a 33-year-old woman into an elevator at 565 Fulton Ave.

They say that Fuentes hit the woman in the head and face with a rock and then pushed her against a wall and attempted to molest her.

When the elevator doors opened the woman was able to run out. They say that as she ran, Fuentes tried to take her bag before running away.

The victim suffered lacerations to her head and lip and numerous loose front teeth and was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Police tracked down Fuentes to Rikers Island on Friday. He is charged with robbery, assault, criminal possession of a weapon and forcible touching.

He was also found to have an open Village of Hempstead Police bench warrant from 2004.

He was to be arraigned on Friday in Hempstead. It was unknown if he had a lawyer.
