Atlanta weekend jam packed with music, sports, traffic

ATLANTA -

More than 100,000 people are expected to pack metro Atlanta's sidewalks and streets this weekend with Music Midtown, the PGA Tour Championship and UNC-Chapel Hill at Georgia Tech. That said, Atlanta police are asking locals to plan accordingly.

Two more events -- Atlanta Fall Gift & Home Furnishings Market at AmericasMart and Miranda Lambert's Locked & Reloaded Tour at Aaron's Amphitheatre in Atlanta -- will be adding a fair amount of traffic to the mix.

Tens of thousands of music lovers will start spilling into Piedmont Park, located off of 10th Street and Piedmont Avenue in the heart of Midtown, about noon Friday.

Last-minute preps were underway with traffic cones being set up, organizers preparing to close down nearby roads to allow for foot traffic and police taking up their stations to be ready as the crowds arrive.

Set up crews worked all-day Thursday making the last round of final preparations for huge annual music festival. They party gets poppin' Friday and runs through Saturday night. Nearby resident Chris Slade says he knows all-too-well what to expect this weekend.

"They did it for about 10 years. The recession killed it off, but it's back again," he said. "It's bigger than ever, lot of people coming, lot of bands."

Other area residents like Terry Shoemaker, from Sandy Springs, say Music Midtown is legendary. He says he's always wanted to go.

"I've not been to Music Midtown and I've always wanted to go, but got some other things going on this weekend. I won't be able to make it this time; but, yeah, I think it's a really good festival, glad to see they have it back," Shoemaker.

Some of the big headliners on tap this year are The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Phoenix, Journey and Kendrick Lamar.

Striking a different chord, sports lovers will also be in Heaven this weekend. Atlanta hosts the Tar Heels (1-1) in town to take on the Yellow Jackets (2-0) at Bobby Dodd Stadium on Saturday.

Then, there's the PGA Tour Championship at the East Lake Golf Club, running through Sunday. It's the 13th time the East lake Golf Club has hosted the tour championship.

Thousands of people are also expected at the North Georgia State Fair in Marietta.

Police advise Atlanta motorists to expect heavier than usual vehicle and foot traffic all around town.  They're advising event-goers to ride MARTA when they can.

Police say event-goers should definitely remain vigilant of any out-of-the-ordinary in their area. Be sure to call 911 to report any suspicious activity.

If you're going to leave any of your valuables in a vehicle, then please make they are out of plain sight and secured, if possible. Reports of laptops, GPS units, tablet computers, purses, firearms and other costly items being stolen from vehicles tend to be very common.

If possible, leave these items at home, Atlanta police said. Take them with you, if you can.

So how will the weather hold up for the outdoor events? The FOX 5 Storm Team says that rain is a possibility on Saturday. A brief period of showers and thunderstorms will move from the northwest to the southeast across the metro area, according to FOX 5 Storm Team chief meteorologist Ken Cook. That means a chance of rain during the morning hours in northwest Georgia, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the mid-metro area and then from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. in areas southeast and south of Atlanta.
