SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - Divers and rescue crews using boats and a helicopter have been searching the Savannah riverfront after witnesses reported seeing a man in the water asking for help.

Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police say two witnesses reported seeing a young man sitting along the waterfront and then hearing a splash on Sunday morning. They reported seeing the man in the water asking for help but were unable to get a nearby rope to him before he sank.

Divers from the police department and Savannah Fire and Rescue searched the area for several hours. They were aided officers on shore and on boats belonging to the police and fire departments, U.S. Coast Guard and Georgia Department of Natural Resources and a coast guard helicopter.
