Orange County Sheriff's deputies say they made an arrest in a cold case from 8 years ago. They say witnesses originally told them a man died after a bike accident, but deputies say it was murder.
33-year-old Jason Gailey is accused of murdering Ronald Johnson back in 2005. Orange County deputy, Sgt. Michael Ruggiero says back then, investigators were given different information on the scene.
"They were told by witnesses that the victim had suffered a bike accident. He had head trauma, he was transported to the hospital and never regained consciousness," Ruggiero said.
Ruggiero went on to say that in reality, Johnson was trying to be a good Samaritan, by trying to break up a fight on Raeford Road. He said, that's when, Gailey allegedly hit him with his gun.
"He was in a physical altercation with another individual. The victim interceded, interjected in that and he was struck."
Investigators said witnesses were afraid to come forward, until now.
"They were intimidated, he was known to carry a firearm and he didn't feel completely safe," Ruggiero said.
Deputies say Johnson was a handyman. With a family that obviously loved him and wouldn't give up.
"Credit goes to his mother and sister who heard some things in the neighborhood. They were tenacious, they would not rest."
