DETROIT (WJBK) -

Detroit City Councilman James Tate will present a plan Thursday that would bring livestock to the city to fight blight by eating the overgrown grass across several lots.

Motown is no farm town, but other cities already have grazing ordinances such as Cleveland and Chicago. Tate admits he was skeptical, too, at first, but believed in the idea after a little research.

The final numbers have not been configured yet, but Tate says the plan would save the city lots of money. "We are financially strapped. That's no secret. And to be able to utilize these natural lawnmowers, as they call them, to utilize them and beat back these bushes," Tate tells Fox 2's Maurielle Lue.

"We have 140 square-miles in this city, and many of those areas are vacant. Why not utilize everything on this earth to try and address the challenges we have?" Tate asks.

"The ideas are boundless on what we can do. But I just think it's a shame that residents come to the city and say, 'Hey, this is what we want.' and we could say no just because it's unfamiliar and, in our minds, we haven't seen it before. We've got to open up our minds to something new and different."

Tate says Brightmoor residents first suggested the idea, called "prescribed grazing."
