PORT ORANGE, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -

Northbound lanes of Interstate 95 in Volusia County were closed for several hours as agents with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigated a fatal shooting involving Port Orange police officers.

Police say a fleeing suspect who was driving recklessly, lost control of his car and crashed off the right shoulder of the interstate.  The crash happened around 11:30 Wednesday morning, approximately one mile north of the Dunlawton Avenue overpass.

As Port Orange officers were moving in towards the suspect's car, they said the man in the car brandished a gun.   Several officers shot at and struck the suspect, later identified as Luke Daniel Castello, 22, of Daytona Beach.

Castello died at the scene.  None of the officers involved, nor any other persons other than the suspect were injured.

Investigators said Castello was also positively identified as the lone suspect involved in a Daytona Beach armed robbery which occurred earlier in the morning.  He was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

Names of the six Port Orange officers involved in the confrontation are being withheld pending authorization of their release by FDLE.  Those officers have all been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.
