Police: Man holding knife to woman shot, wounded

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -

Police say officers have shot and wounded a man holding a knife to a woman at a Daytona Beach home.

Authorities say police were called to the home early Wednesday, forced their way inside and saw the man holding a knife to a woman's throat.

Police Chief Mike Chitwood has identified the man as Jermaine Green.  Green, 32, is a former NFL runningback for the New York Giants. He was signed in 2004.

Investigators said officers had no choice but to fire on Green after he threatened to harm the woman.

Green was hit several times while the woman was shot once in the arm.   He remains in critical condition at a hospital.  The 37-year-old woman is expected to make a full recovery.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is now investigating.
