The group called The Arming Citizens Project has been handing out flyers in an Orlando neighborhood offering free shotguns to any resident that wants them. The flyers were handed out in the Sunshine Garden neighborhood of Orlando, in the area around Adanson Street between Lee Rd. and Fairbanks Ave.
To get the free shotgun, a person would have to take both a safety class and pass a background check. Ron Ritter is the Florida Director for the Armed Citizens Project. He says they are going across the state handing these flyers out because Florida is the right place for their campaign.
"The people in Florida realize that if their neighbor is armed, they're safer, and not only that, if you are deterring crime, one of the best ways to deter crime is with a gun. The response time of a police officer is one thing. The response time of my shotgun is a completely different thing."
In the neighborhood, Leroy Martin was surprised to see the flyer. He kept it for two days before throwing it away.
"I thought it was kind of strange. I hadn't heard of anything like that before, and I really didn't know what to think," he said.
When asked if he would take up the gun offer, he said he wouldn't. The reason? "Because I already have a gun," he told us.
The opinions in Sunshine Gardens ranged from a great idea to completely crazy. Ron Ritter says he's heard it all too, from positive feedback to comparisons to the Trayvon Martin case.
"People trying to bring, you know, Trayvon into and such which is a ridiculous comparison. We are talking about a shotgun in your home, not a handgun on the street."
Offering people free guns is legal in Florida as long as the background checks are done properly.
