DETROIT (AP) - Two brothers who spent a quarter-century behind bars for a killing they say they had no part in walked out of a Detroit courthouse as free men.

Circuit Judge Lawrence Talon formally dismissed the murder charges against Raymond and Thomas Highers on Thursday, a day after Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced she wouldn't be retrying the men for the 1987 slaying of 65-year-old Robert Karey.

The case has been scheduled for trial early next month.

Asked what he planned to do next, Thomas Highers smiled and said: "Life."

The Highers brothers were convicted in 1988 of felony murder and sentenced to life in prison.

Talon ordered them retried last year and freed on $10,000 bonds after new witness testimony suggested they may have been misidentified.
