Known scammer accused of elaborate adoption scheme

STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. (WJBK) -

A Sterling Heights family believes a woman tried to pull off an elaborate adoption scheme involving children she had no legal authority over.

Valerie Gorgan met the aforementioned woman through a mutual friend. The woman told Gorgan her name was Kendra Versace, but police believe her real name is Kelly Ladd. Gorgan says Ladd befriended her and convinced her to put her 20-month-old daughter and 6-month-old son in Ladd's care while her apartment was settling a mold issue. Gorgan learned something wasn't right when one of her friends noticed pictures of her children on Facebook - in the hands of complete strangers. "We don't know how many more people actually have had our children, and we just want to know what did they go through," Gorgan tells Fox 2's Taryn Asher.

Ladd is said to have watched the children for weeks at a time, and would meet people from an online group called "Macomb County Swappers." Police say in at least one case Ladd befriended a woman, known as Leann, at a Sterling Heights McDonald's and introduced her to a young boy, and said he needed a home. Leann shared interest in adopting the boy, and says Ladd told her all she had to do was make a donation to The Angel Care House, a shelter in Royal Oak. Since then, police looked into that organization and say it does not exist.

Meanwhile, Leann became concerned when Ladd did not go through with the adoption of the little boy and contacted police. Investigators began looking into Ladd and found a long criminal history: at least 17 convictions for fraud, more than 30 aliases and six social security numbers.

At this time Ladd has not been charged with anything because police say, technically, no crime has been committed since no money or children were ever exchanged. If you recognize Ladd and believe you were part of her suspected adoption scheme contact Sterling Heights police.
