Cindy and Valerie Ananias: The Ship Turned Into Chaos

Posted: Updated:

Cindy and Valerie Ananias were on board the Italian cruise ship Costa Concordia when it ran around on January 13th, 2012. More than 4000 people were on board, 2 of them died.

A family from Downey, Calif. found themselves among the last passengers to disembark from the ill-fated Costa Concordia cruise ship after it crashed and capsized on a Friday night in June, 2012.

Dean, Georgia, Valerie and Cindy Ananias aided families and children off the capsized barge and into life boats until the last possible moments.

After it was all over, the family made a pact with each other to use the experience to advocate for reform on cruise ships. Until then, as Valerie and her sister Cindy Ananais told Steve Edwards and guest-host Heather Dubrow on Good Day L.A.,all four are boycotting the industry until change happens.

One of the major problems with the botched evacuation of the Costa Concordia, said Valerie, was the lack of communication in the aftermath of the impact. "Everything just went at a tilt" during dinner. "When I felt that, I knew this wasn't good." Still, as she watched her drink and dinner plate start tilting at impossible angles, Valerie described hearing on the loud speakers that the impact and violent shuddering of the ship's propellers was nothing more than an electrical problem.

"Anyone in their right mind knew this is not just an electrical problem," said Valerie.

The book is called ‘S-O-S' and it's on sale now.
