GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -

A man and woman tell police that a bizarre road rage incident led to a shooting overnight.  Authorities are trying to piece together what happened, but they say the situation started in DeKalb County, and ended at a gas station on Jimmy Carter Boulevard in Gwinnett County.

According to police, a man and woman traveling in a black minivan told investigators they picked up another man and woman who were hitchhiking in Tucker.  As soon as they got into the minivan, the driver says he got involved in some kind of road rage incident with another female driver in another car.

Police say the driver told them he pulled off Lawrenceville Highway into the Kroger parking lot, and that's when the woman in the other car started shooting, hitting the driver's girlfriend.  The couple says the hitchhikers bolted on foot, and the driver of the minivan drove to a gas station located at Jimmy Carter Boulevard and Britt Road, where he got help for his girlfriend.

The victim was taken to the hospital where she underwent surgery, and was listed in stable condition.

Authorities say they're still investigating.
