DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

Detroit Police Department's Mobile Command Post will be stationed at Charity Lutheran Church at 17220 Kelly Rd. until Saturday, Oct. 12. The post acts as a mini station for officers and residents.

This mobile command center is fully operational. There are two laptops where residents can fill out police reports and accident reports. Residents can also get a police report number on the spot. The center is also hooked in to dispatch so if residents need more police back up, they can get it here fast.

DPD chose Charity Lutheran Church as its starting point for the post due to the recent increase of crime in the area.

"This neighborhood has a lot of shootings. I don't know why its so much shooting, but its just a lot of shooting," Roderick Rogers tells Lue. Rogers lives in the area.  Police say car theft has also been on the rise - and even the church has not been exempt.

"We had a car stolen from the parking lot a couple of weeks ago. A matter of fact, one of our parishioners had a car stolen twice within two weeks," Steven Essenburgh, a member of the church, says.

But now, a makeshift mini-precinct stands right in the parking lot of that very church, and in the heart of the neighborhood.

Next week the post will move to a new location and will continue to increase police visibility by relocating itself throughout the rest of the year. Officers will personally meet residents and pass out information for auto theft hotlines and Crime Stoppers.
