Hot Topic: When should children start dating?

It was The Supremes that sang "You Can't Hurry Love" and some Canadian researchers believe that may be the case when it comes to children and dating.

Parents concerned their children are growing up too fast now can point to a study released by York University in Toronto to back their decisions to not allow their children to date too early.

The Daily Mail reports the study monitored 698 students from 12 schools in the country between 1996 and 2003 to come solidify the findings in the study. The students were all between the ages of 11 and 14 at the start of the study.

They say that children who dated before the age of 14 were more likely to have unsafe sex, abuse alcohol and exhibit abnormal behaviors. Those behaviors include lying, cheating and running away. In comparison, those that started dating in their teens appeared to have little to no side effects.

The study suggests that the stress of a relationship can strain a child not fully mature enough to handle it whereas older children who have had time to mature could deal with a relationship easier.
