New York Road Runners, the group that organizes dozens of running races in the city every year, has announced an eight-year partnership with Mumbai-based Tata Consultancy Services that gives the famous annual marathon a new name: TCS New York City Marathon.

"We are thrilled that TCS will be joining NYRR as our premier partner and title sponsor of the NYC Marathon," Mary Wittenberg, NYRR president and CEO, said in a statement. "TCS won us over with their commitment to our sport and to elevating the health and well-being of our community, their technological excellence and their belief in the infinite potential in front of us to jointly help and inspire people through running."

The new name takes effect for the 2014 marathon. This year's race, which is set for November 3, will be the last to bear the name ING New York City Marathon. NYRR and ING are ending their 10-year partnership.

TCS, an IT and consultancy company that has worked with NYRR since 2010, will also sponsor several other premier races on the calendar, including the Oakley New York Mini 10K (an elite women's-only race), the Fifth Avenue Mile, the Midnight Run (which takes place on New Year's), and the 5-Borough Series. TCS will also support NYRR's youth and community programs, which promote health and fitness.

TCS had previously developed a mobile app for the NYC Half, the group's flagship half-marathon, and will be building a new app for this year's marathon.

In an email to NYRR members on Wednesday, Wittenberg wrote: "Your commitment has helped to put us in a strong position to create a comprehensive, long-term, year-round partnership with a company that's closely aligned with our goals-and, of most interest to you, a company that wants to help us enhance your running experience and help us further support the community."

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
