Prosecutors say a southwest suburban woman hit her 6-month-old granddaughter in the head and body with a sledgehammer before slitting her throat with a carving knife.

The grandmother, Alfreda Giedrojc, 61, of the 6600 block of West 91st Street in Oak Lawn, has been charged with murder stemming from the death of her granddaughter, Vivian Summers, of Bolingbrook.

Cook County Judge Kerry Kennedy on Monday ordered Giedrojc held without bond.

"Her father and grandfather had stepped out of the grandparents' house for a short time when this horrific event took place," Oak Lawn police said in a statement Monday morning.

Police responded to a call at about 10:45 a.m. Sunday of an armed subject in the 6600 block of 91st Street in Oak Lawn. While en route officers received information that an infant child had "suffered a significant injury," according to an earlier statement from police.

After life-support measures were performed on the scene, Vivian was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn where she was pronounced dead at 1:48 p.m., police said.

An autopsy found the infant died of blunt force injuries of the head, and incised wounds of the neck, the Cook County Medical Examiner's office said. Her death was ruled a homicide.
