Vehicle stolen at Detroit gas station with child still in backseat

DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

A vehicle was stolen from a Detroit gas station while, unbeknownst to the thief, a 10-year-old boy was still sitting in the back seat of the car. The suspect then safely let the boy out of the car and then continued to drive off.

It started when the father of the boy went inside the Citgo gas station on Dearborn and Cobalt while the boy waited in the still-running car.

While the father was inside, someone snuck into the red Chevy Blazer, got behind the wheel and drove off - with the boy still in the back seat. Fox 2 is told the suspect didn't realize the boy was in the vehicle until the child screamed.

Police say the suspect then let the boy get out of the vehicle, right before proceeding to drive onto the freeway. The boy then ran back to the gas station to find his father, but he discovered his father was already gone.

"Dad gets into another vehicle and begins to pursue his vehicle," Sgt. Michael Woody of the Detroit Police Department tells Fox 2's Andrea Isom. "I'm sure he was more interested in getting his son back more than his vehicle," he continues.

The two cars engaged in a high-speed chase. The father eventually lost the suspect in the Blazer around the area where the vehicle was later recovered. It was recovered near Gleason and South Wearing.

"We received a tip from some neighbors that the vehicle was driven into a garage located in southwest Detroit," Woody says. "[The suspect] will get caught. There is no question about that." Woody says, in addition to auto theft, possible kidnapping charges may be in play now, too.

Witnesses at the gas station say they know who the suspect is, and his face is on surveillance video. However, Detroit police cannot confirm that man is a person of interest at this time.
