Fire safety training for health care workers

Fire safety training for health care workers

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Health care workers took on some intense training on long island on Wednesday. They faced flames and some hypothetical life or death scenarios.

This training came on the heels of a devastating incident in Chicago where a man at a nursing home caught on fire and died. It was all caused by a lighter in his pocket.

The Nassau County Fire Academy put health care workers in tricky situations using real fire. After a fire safety briefing, participants--including doctors, nurses, and custodians--were put to the test. They learned how to use a fire extinguisher, how to put out a bed fire, and even how to carry a patient out of a smoky room.

The lessons didn't end there.

"I had no idea that you could put out a waste paper fire in a small bin with a pillowcase or a newspaper," said one student.

Nassau County Fire Marshal Vincent McManus said this training session is particularly important.

"People that are in healthcare facilities are at a disadvantage because they perhaps cannot rescue themselves or get themselves out of a bad situation so it's critical that staff know what to do in the event of an emergency," McManus said.

Participants said they also learned life-saving skills built on important principles like trust.

"What they said, it was hotter up higher, cooler down lower, easier to breathe and if you follow the instructions we all got out okay," one said.

The academy holds this event every October during fire prevention month.
