City Council adjourns Belle Isle lease discussion

Posted: Updated:

DETROIT (AP) -- The Detroit City Council has adjourned a discussion on a lease deal for a popular, 985-acre island park in the middle of the Detroit River.

A special council session was put off Friday and rescheduled for Monday at City Hall.

State-appointed emergency manager Kevyn Orr and Gov. Rick Snyder signed a 30-year lease on Oct. 1 that would make Belle Isle a state park. The deal would save the cash-strapped city more than $6 million each year in maintenance.

The state would invest $10 million to $20 million during the initial three years. There would be an annual $11 per-vehicle admission charge, the same cost for entering any state park.

Snyder withdrew a similar offer earlier this year following opposition from the council.

Orr filed bankruptcy for Detroit in July.
