Family Reunites With Lost Pet, 600 Miles Away

LAGRANGE, Ga. -

It was a long distance reunion for a Missouri family and their dog. The golden retriever ran off and somehow ending up in Georgia, after traveling more than 600 miles.

Honey is getting plenty of attention from her family, friends and neighbors. The golden retriever ran off while staying with relatives in Cuba, Missouri. That was on July 5th.

"It was heartbreaking, it was truly heartbreaking," recalled Emily Wallis, Honey's owner.

Then came the shocking news. Emily Wallis received a phone call from Honey's vet this week.

"And he said, ‘Emily can you sit down? I think we may have found Honey.'"

Honey was in LaGrange, Georgia, more than 600 miles away. The Wallis family loaded up the car and drove South.

Then came the reunion. It's video Emily Wallis can't stop watching.

"We watched it over and over and over and I cry every time I watch it," she said.

No one knows how honey traveled so far. The dog was micro-chipped nearly 10 years ago, but rescuers did not find that microchip at first.

Honey was put up for adoption and an Alabama family was about to adopt the dog. However, rescuers made one more scan for a microchip, and that's when they finally located honey.

"They said, ‘oh my gosh, this dog belongs to somebody.'"

And so Honey was reunited with the Wallis family.

"The whole drive home from Atlanta, the nine hour drive, you know we`d stop at truck stops and play ball with her and she`d smell around and we were thinking had she been her before...because we have no idea how she made it to Georgia," Wallis recalled.

The only thing the family knows for sure is how close they came to losing their four-legged family member.

    NICE EASTER WEEKEND

The first half of the holiday weekend has been great and Easter Sunday looks just as nice. Clouds thin out late tonight with temperatures falling back to the 40s.

Initially it'll be jacket weather early Sunday morning but plenty of sunshine will warm us into the 60s by afternoon.  High temperatures will be a few degrees cooler than Saturday.

It will be noticeably cooler and breezy at the shore with highs in the low 50s.  Quiet conditions continue into Monday.
