Demonstrators want Detroit CFO removed after racial remark

DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

A small group of demonstrators gathered Monday outraged after learning Detroit CFO Jim Bonsall is suspended with pay and under investigation, after he reportedly admitted to making a racially-charged comment. The comment was asking permission to shoot anyone "in a hoodie" if he participated in the city's annual patrol on Angel's Night. The comment struck a wrong chord with many for drawing ties to the recent case involving Trayvon Martin, a Florida teen who was walking with his hood up before being involved in an altercation that resulted in his death.

"Public servants serve the public - not make threats on our children who are walking around in hoodies in the city of Detroit," says Rev. Charles Williams of the National Action Network.

The demonstrators want Gov. Snyder to take immediate action to remove Bonsall from office. The city's former financial director also accuses Bonsall of demoting her, and demeaning and berating black women. She sent a letter to Mayor Dave Bing and Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr outlining her concerns.

"There is no reason that he should still be able to receive a paycheck from the citizens of Detroit," Rev. Williams says.

Bonsall issued a statement last week apologizing and saying he never meant to offend anyone. Orr's office issued a statement saying the emergency manager takes the allegations seriously and will thoroughly investigate. Bonsall was appointed by Orr.

A spokesperson for the emergency manager says the findings of the internal investigation will determine whether disciplinary action against Bonsall is necessary. Members of this group say if nothing is done they plan to start a nationwide campaign.
