Missing for the last five days, a convicted sex offender surrendered to authorities on Wednesday, claiming he had ingested illegal drugs.
Jeffrey Bailey, 58, turned himself into the State Probation Office located on John Young Parkway around 9:45 a.m. He was then taken to the Osceola County Jail.
"He removed the bracelet after he had purchased street-level drugs and those drug affected him and he left town. We are trying to verify that storY," said Osceola County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Twis Lizasuain.
Bailey was released from prison in 2010 after serving time for lewd and lascivious act with a child under 16 -- his GPS monitoring was a condition of his state parole and was being monitored by the Florida Parole Commission.
But on Friday, Bailey's monitor stopped working, or was removed, and deputies began searching for the predator.
Bailey claims he did nothing illegal after removing the monitor and had no contact with children.
"I did this for my family," he said, when asked why he decided to turn himself in.
Bailey failed to report an address change as required by law. He was wanted on that charge and on a charge of violating his probation, which was set to end on Nov. 8. He is he is being held without bond.
