Smart watches for fitness

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Rafael and James conveniently forgot their shirts. But, look closely (I'm sure some of you already are): something else is missing on their wrists.

Some personal trainers told us they are considering muscling their way into one of the hottest news trends in fitness: getting themselves a brand-new Nike Fuel Band SE or the just-announced Adidas Smart Watch.

Adidas new smart watch comes with built-in GPS tracking, Bluetooth connectivity, and pulse-based heart-rate tracking.

For roughly half of the $399 Adidas price, Nike offers an activity tracker that tells you thing like how many steps you take during the day and how well you sleep at night. You wear it 24 hours a day.

Companies like Fitbit and Jawbone make something similar to Nike.

But the small wrist bands and watches are already creating some big competition.

A degenerative eye disease slowly robbed Roger Pontz of his vision.  Diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa as a teenager, Pontz has been almost completely blind for years. Now, thanks to a high-tech procedure that involved the surgical implantation of a "bionic eye," he's regained enough of his eyesight to catch small glimpses of his wife, grandson and cat.

The Cliffs at Long Island City is a new gym in Queens with a focus on rock climbing. You'll find rope climbing (or top climbing) over 50 feet high, boldering (which is done on shorter walls un-roped over gymnastic pads), traditional rappelling, and even Aussie-style rappelling (going down the wall face first), and a fitness center, according to owner Mike Woffert, an expert climber.
