Husband of Montebello Mayor Arrested on Suspicion of Meth Sales

Posted: Updated:

MONTEBELLO (CNS/KTTV) - The husband of Montebello's mayor was arrested today on suspicion of selling drugs.

Ruben Guerrero, 44, was arrested about 7 a.m. as he left his home in the 1500 block of Los Angeles Avenue, according to the sheriff's department.

Guerrero was booked on suspicion of sales of methamphetamine and sales of narcotics near a school, sheriff's officials said. Bail was set at $60,000, and he remained in custody early this afternoon.

Warrants were served this morning at two homes, one in the 1500 block of Los Angeles Avenue, and the other in the 1600 block of Los Angeles Avenue, according to the sheriff's department.

Guerrero is the husband of Montebello Mayor Christina Cortez. Montebello city officials referred inquiries to the sheriff's department.

Earlier this year, Montebello City Councilman Frank Gomez sought a restraining order against Guerrero, claiming he had been twice threatened by the mayor's husband -- once on the phone and once during a council meeting, the San Gabriel Valley Tribune reported.

According to the paper, Guerrero allegedly left a threatening message on the phone of Gomez's girlfriend in June 2012. He allegedly threatened Gomez again during a November 2012 council meeting, lashing out the councilman and telling him, "Pick on my wife in front of me and see what happens," the paper reported.

Guerrero admitted to the Tribune that he made the statements, saying Gomez "has been disrespecting my wife for the last two years."
