Dog owner recounts gruesome pit bull mauling

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Bitten, bruised and bandaged -- this is the better case scenario after Friday night's dog attack.

"I'm ok personally, but I'm really distraught because I didn't mean for this to happen. I'm just really hurt and upset," said Katesha Curtiss.

22-year-old Katesha Curtiss was injured when her three pit bulls attacked her neighbor as she was walking her Chihuahua in their Calumet Heights neighborhood.

"I actually came in at the middle. I know once I had got up there my main focus was to get my dogs off of her and too make sure that she was all right," said Curtiss.

But it was too late.

On Saturday night, the 64-year-old is still at Stroger Hospital in critical condition with gruesome leg injuries.

"I've had my dogs for six years and this has never happened. My gates are always locked, everyone in my neighborhood knows my dogs, so for this unfortunate situation to happen, I'm like really upset and I'm really hurt because I can't just imagine what she is going through," said Curtiss.

Curtiss says the older victim lives around the corner and she's known her since she was a child. Though Curtiss was injured in the attack, she was also at fault and received nine citations from Chicago Police for failing to keep her animals restrained, licensed and properly vaccinated. Each citation carries up to a 500-dollar fine.

But don't blame the pit bulls, blame the owner -- Youtube is filled with videos from pit bull advocates, including Kevin Foster.

"Again there's so much screwed up philosophy about the way people think about pit bulls," said Foster, a pit bull advocate.

"I'm no longer going to possess any dogs at the time. I just feel like it's necessary, I have three small children and they were just for protection because there's been a lot of break ins in the neighborhood, and I was just trying to make sure that my family was protected," said Curtiss.

The pit bulls are in the custody of Animal Care and Control.
