Scott Dixon: Racing...It Does Not Get Old

Scott Dixon: Racing...It Does Not Get Old

Posted: Updated:

On Saturday night, Scott Dixon won his third Indycar championship at Fontana. He talked to Steve Monday morning about his big weekend win and joked about what he needs to work on.

"The problem I have is that it happens every five years, I need to shorten up somehow."

Steve mentioned some of the banged up cars he saw in Saturday's race and asked when the driver knows he's done for the day.

"Normally, when the give off to the engine is, you know, they just blow up and when they blow up they blow up big and we saw that several time throughout the night. But then the other side of it is a crash. If you hit, if you're going 230 miles an hour...if you spin, you're gonna hit the wall pretty hard."

Steve also asked Scott if things get nasty between him and his pit crew during a race.

"These are people you have to work with so, you know, you have disagreements now and then but normally most the arguments are actually about other people on track...typically."

What about the danger involved in racing?

"All you're thinking is about geting to that corner, you're thinking about how you can go faster, how you can pass that person, if you've got somebody in front of you..for me as soon as you get the helmet on and the car starts and you're away, it's just that."

Fun facts about Scott Dixon (Source: Wikipedia)

1) Scott is a New Zealand motor racer who became the most successful all-time driver in the Indy Racing League (IRL) championship in the United States when he won the Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio in August 2009. This took his total to 20 wins. Competing for Chip Ganassi Racing since joining IndyCar, Dixon has won the championship three times, in 2003, 2008, and 2013, and he won the 92nd Indianapolis 500 in 2008 from pole position.

2) At Kentucky in August that year he equalled the record for six wins in a season. Known as a consistent race finisher, Dixon has twice in his IndyCar career set the record for finishing the highest number of consecutive races, 28, at Watkins Glen in 2005, and again at Mid-Ohio in 2007. He has been on the podium 48 times from the 90 races he has completed, and his ratio of wins to career starts is the best of all-time regular drivers in the IRL.

3) Among notable awards won by Dixon are the Jim Clark Trophy (1999, 2001, 2004) and the Bruce McLaren Trophy (2003, 2008). In 2012 he was appointed Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit.
