Police Search For Gunmen In Society Hill Shooting

PHILADELPHIA -

The victim's keys were still in the door of his 2007 Jeep Cherokee when police arrived on the scene of the early Monday morning attempted robbery and shooting that left a 33-year-old war veteran pistol whipped and shot once in the back as he tried to escape his attackers at Second and Walnut in Society Hill.

"The keys were in the car, they could have easily took the car, but for some reason they decided to shoot him," said Capt. George Fuchs of the Philadelphia Police Department.

The shooting occurred just a few feet from the Society Hill Sheraton, the Old Bookbinders and various tourist hot spots, not to mention upscale condos and nightclubs nearby.

Police say the victim had just left the Blurr nightclub in Old City, stopped to get something to eat nearby and was jumped as he opened his SUV door.

"My prayers are with him and I hope he's ok," said one local resident.

Officers arriving on the scene just after 2 a.m. scooped up the shooting victim and raced him to Jefferson Hospital where he was listed in stable condition with a gunshot wound to his back.

"Well you're shocked. Society Hill, you don't expect those kind of things," one neighbor told Fox 29.

"We had a great time visiting Philadelphia here so kind of surprised to hear about the news," said Dan Peterson who was in town from Minnesota.

While detectives searched the surrounding area for surveillance video of the suspects, police chiefs in town for the international police chief's conference hosted by Commissioner Charles Ramsey walked the streets near their hotel, just a few feet from the shooting scene.

"The police convention is staying at our hotel at the Sheraton so that makes us feel more safe I guess with all the police here," said Natalie Peterson.

Investigators say a city surveillance camera at Second and Walnut does not record video.

"I hope they get the guys who did it", another man added.

Police did retrieve some surveillance video near the scene, but it has not been released at this time.

Investigators say both suspects wore hooded sweatshirts and carried guns. The victim remains in stable condition.
