Repeat sexual offender in custody after women groped around Henry Ford Hospital

DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

A registered sex offender is back in police custody as he is suspected of groping several woman on and near the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.

It started Monday morning when the first victim was taking her daily walk. She says she spotted a suspicious man on the sidewalk. She walked faster; but then so did the man.

"She noticed he started picking up his pace. She said he came up against her and nudged her ... grabbed her behind," the victim's husband tells Fox 2's Taryn Asher.

She took off running to a nearby McDonalds and called police. However, she went home after they didn't show up.

Then it appears the suspect came back to the same area the next day to the hospital on Grand Boulevard. This time he tried to get a feel for a hospital employee. The medical tech says the suspect grabbed her arm and her backside and then took off running into the hospital lobby. She followed him and found him rubbing the leg of a woman who was sleeping. She called security immediately.

Wayne State University Police took the man in custody and, while he was sitting in the back of the police car, -- happened to walk by, once again on her daily walk. Her husband tells us she went prepared this time: "She said, 'I'm not going to let him make me stop doing my walk.' She had a big stick today, and said she was going to beat him like a dog."

But she didn't have to - she saw him sitting in the vehicle and recognized him immediately. She went up to police and told them he was the same man who groped her the day before.

Police have identified him as 21-year-old Devante Glass and discovered he has a history of this behavior. He is a registered sex offender convicted of the same thing two times prior. In 2010 he got probation, but then was later convicted of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct and spent two years in prison. He was released this past June.

Glass will eventually be charged with fourth-degree CSC and for not staying in compliance with the Michigan State Police Sex Offender Registry.

The hospital issued this statement in response to the recent incidents:

"The Henry Ford Hospital campus is patrolled 24 hours a day, and is a safe and secure environment for our patients, employees and visitors. Unfortunately, these types of incidents occur in communities large and small. We have a very strong partnership with Wayne State University and the Detroit Police Department to maintain a safe environment on our campus and in the surrounding community."
