ATLANTA -

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution's tweet about a Georgia lottery winner is causing a stir online.

The newspaper tweeted Wednesday that the $1 million winner, whose name is Willie Lynch, "can get 40 acres and a whole lotta mules."

The tweet appears to reference a concept for agrarian reform for black farmers, following disruptions to the institution of slavery provoked by the Civil War. (Read more here)

The tweet was deleted, and another tweet that was sent afterwards reads,"The AJC apologizes for & deeply regrets the tweet that was posted earlier today. We are working to address this situation internally."

Newspaper officials told FOX 5's Chris Shaw that the account was not hacked and that the tweet was sent by employees. They said that all tweets must be approved by two different people before being sent.

AJC editor Kevin Riley posted a statement on the paper's website saying, "The Atlanta Journal-Constitution sincerely regrets an earlier Twitter message that contained an inappropriate statement.

We took immediate action to apologize via social media and will issue an apology in Thursday's print edition.  We do not condone such offensive messages and are reviewing our procedures to ensure this type of error does not happen again."

The Atlanta-Journal Constitution is owned by Cox Media. That company also owns WSB-TV, which televises the lottery drawing in the metro Atlanta area.

The Georgia Lottery issued a statement saying, "The tweet was inappropriate and offensive. We have contacted the Atlanta-Journal Constitution to express our disappointment and concerns.  We also reached out to the winner and expressed our support."
