LA Kings: Hockey Fights Cancer Awareness Night

Posted: Updated:

LOS ANGELES (CNS/KTTV) - The Los Angeles Kings will help fight cancer at tonight's home game against the Phoenix Coyotes with a blood and marrow drive.

It's part of Hockey Fights Cancer Awareness Night, a monthlong league-wide initiative. The blood drive starts at Staples Center at 5:30 p.m., with each donor getting two tickets to the game.

The event includes a bone marrow drive. Individuals between the ages of 18 and 60 in good physical health and with a good medical history are asked to participate. The procedure takes 15 minutes and involves four swabs to the cheek.

Kings players will wear lavender jerseys and use sticks wrapped with purple tape during warm-ups. The jerseys and sticks will be autographed and auctioned by the Kings Care Foundation in the arena and online at auctions.nhl.com.

A one-of-a-kind, hand-painted Hockey Fights Cancer goalie helmet will also be auctioned.

The Kings Care Foundation will be selling Hockey Fights Cancer autographed mystery pucks for $25 and mini-hockey glove key chains for a $10 donation to Hockey Fights Cancer.

Kings and Coyotes players will have lavender Hockey Fights Cancer decals on their helmets. Kings coaches, broadcasters and staff will wear lavender Hockey Fights Cancer ties, which are available to purchase at shop.nhl.com. A portion of the proceeds from all items will benefit Hockey Fights Cancer.

All sponsor dasher boards will be in lavender, the color representing awareness for all types of cancer.

Tyler J. Fithian, an 18-year-old who has been diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, will drop the ceremonial puck. His wish to skate with Kings center Anze Kopitar was fulfilled during Wednesday's practice at the Toyota Sports Center in El Segundo through the Make a Wish Foundation.
