Vernon Hills hockey player seriously injured after `body check`

A high school hockey player from Vernon Hills is expected to make a full recovery after suffering two fractured vertebrae in a game over the weekend.

Michael Spinell, 16, who plays for the Ice Cats of Libertyville and Vernon Hills, was injured after being checked into the boards at the Glacier Ice Arena. The opposing player was called for boarding and ejected from the game.

The incident is still under investigation by the Illinois Hockey Association.
