Yankee Air Museum needs $2 million to save old bomber plant

YPSILANTI TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WJBK) -

The Yankee Air Museum says it needs to raise $2 million by Nov. 1 to save a portion of the historic Willow Run bomber plant. The facility in Ypsilanti Township opened in 1941 and played a key role during World War II. It later became a General Motors plant and closed in 2010.

"There were 8,700 B-24 bombers built in two and a half years here," said Dennis Norton, founder of the Yankee Air Museum. "It was a fantastic production run, couldn't be equaled anywhere in the country and we did it right here. We're trying to save a little piece of this plant that was so important to our history."

The museum started the "save the bomber plant" project two years ago. They've raised $6 million so far, but another $2 million is needed by Nov. 1 to renovate a 175,000-square-foot portion of the building. The rest of the 5-million-square-foot facility is slated to be demolished.
