Douglasville man awaiting kidney gets dream wedding

DOUGLASVILLE, Ga. -

One very deserving couple got to see their big day become a reality on Sunday.  Thomas and Rebecca Smith say FOX 5 viewers they say played a crucial role in making their wedding happen.

Serious health problems nearly forced the Smiths to postpone their wedding, but now they are newlyweds and want to thank everyone who helped.

Thomas Smith got to see his "princess" walk down the aisle of Heritage Baptist Church in Douglasville.  He tells FOX 5 he wanted so much for this day to happen, and for them to be together forever.  But for Smith, forever is something he and his bride do not take for granted just as they vow to love one another "in sickness and in health."

About a year ago, their lives, their planning for the future and their big day took a sudden turn. A condition related to his diabetes forced Thomas to be in urgent need of both a new kidney and a new pancreas. Every cent the couple had started to go towards this, leaving almost nothing to pay for their October wedding.

Two months ago, we first posted the story about their plight. Then, Rebecca could not even afford a wedding dress.

Since then, they say they have been "enveloped in love from our community." Donations started to pour in from FOX 5 viewers. Soon a dress, tux, shoes and wedding bands were promised to the couple. Brides Atlanta helped the couple with the majority of the donations.

The couple says they were overwhelmed by the generosity.

They say Thomas should get his transplants early next year and they hope their new union will last a lifetime.
