Firefighter hurt responding to Detroit firebombing

Posted: Updated:

DETROIT -- Authorities say a firefighter was injured while responding to a firebombing at a Detroit home that happened amid the city's annual anti-arson campaign.

Crews responded to the home on Virgil Street, near Telegraph, on the city's west side early Wednesday. Reports say a woman and young children escaped unharmed.

A fire official at the scene says one firefighter fell and was taken to a hospital with a neck injury.

Detroit residents and city workers went on patrol Tuesday evening as part of an annual anti-arson campaign for the pre-Halloween period that once saw an upsurge of fires. The city says fire totals won't be released until after the Angels' Night period, which runs through Thursday.

The patrols are focused particularly on protecting vacant Detroit structures from arsonists. Flint has a similar program.
