City Council Hears Testimonies Of Firefighter Demotions

Posted: Updated:

It was an emotional day at City Hall as the fight over more than a dozen demotions in the Philadelphia Fire Department reignites.

City Council members listened to testimonials today about the demotions.

Last spring, a judge ordered the city to grant automatic promotions to 14 firefighters.

But the city appealed, saying it's not legally required to do that and a higher court agreed overturning the decision.

The city took the 14 promotions back. The union says those firefighters are being treated unfairly. The department disagrees.

"It was not anything about an individual. It was an organizational decision. It wasn't about anyone personally," Lloyd Ayers of The Philadelphia Fire Department said. "We're held to a higher standard. We're held to honor, integrity, strength of character. That's how we live our lives. That's how these men live their lives. Yet the commissioner can stand before you gentlemen and lie outright."

The union is appealing the court decision that led to the demotions, and says they are prepared to go to the Supreme Court if they have to.

    NICE EASTER WEEKEND

The first half of the holiday weekend has been great and Easter Sunday looks just as nice. Clouds thin out late tonight with temperatures falling back to the 40s.

Initially it'll be jacket weather early Sunday morning but plenty of sunshine will warm us into the 60s by afternoon.  High temperatures will be a few degrees cooler than Saturday.

It will be noticeably cooler and breezy at the shore with highs in the low 50s.  Quiet conditions continue into Monday.
