PAULDING COUNTY, Ga. -

A postal worker in Paulding County has been arrested after allegedly stealing mail.

The Office of the Inspector General with the U.S. Postal Service said that Vanessa Locklear had about 500 pieces of mail when she was arrested at the post office on Saturday.

"Credit cards, debit cards, social security numbers, birth certificates," said Sgt. Bill Gorman of the Dallas, Ga. Police Department.

The bulk of the missing mail was found at Locklear's Rockmart home, authorities said. Gorman said that Locklear's husband contacted authorities.

Police and postal officials said they also found mail in Locklear's car, in the floorboards and in the glove box.

When she was arrested, Locklear reportedly told police that she had the mail because she couldn't finish her route that day. However, the police report also said that her husband had walked in on her and a friend as they were rifling through the mail. She also reportedly said she was looking for gift cards and money.

The report also stated that police found a crack or meth pipe in Locklear's car.

Locklear has been placed on unpaid suspension pending the result of the investigation.

Dallas police are advising potential mail theft victims to be patient as the Postal Service sorts through the stolen mail to find the victims.

"They are going to mail out a letter or some card, a form letter to let them know that the mail had been tampered with," Gorman said.

Locklear has been charged with theft by receiving stolen property and financial card theft. Authorities said they expect to file more charges against her.
