Woman And Baby Ejected From Car, Police Investigating

Santa Ana, CA -

(FOX 11 / CNS) A woman died at a hospital after falling from -- or being pushed from -- a pickup truck in Santa Ana, authorities said today.

The woman was taken to the hospital about 8 p.m. Thursday from the area of Edinger Avenue and Raitt Street, Santa Ana police said. A girl about 2 years old also was taken to a hospital with unspecified injuries.

The woman's name was not immediately released and the relationship between the woman and the toddler was unclear.

The dark-color pickup truck left the scene.

Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna told Fox 11 that detectives were trying to determine what happened. "If this was a family member and a domestic thing, how could you leave
your family behind, especially with a child laying in the street?" Bertagna said.

"If it's some kind of kidnapping ... then obviously we need to catch the suspect," Bertagna said. "But the key for right now is finding out where this child belongs. That's the important part."

Anyone with information on the case was urged to call police.

From Hal Eisner:

Even for police in Santa Ana what happened last night is unexplainable. A woman in her 20's is either pushed or jumps from a dark pickup truck on Edinger Street along with her baby believed to be 10 to 18 months old. Both are taken to a hospital. The woman dies. The baby is injured, but survives. No one knows the identity of either one.

Corporal Anthony Bertagna simply says they're Hispanic and the Coroner's office is using DNA to forensically try to determine identities. Bertagna says the driver of the pickup truck fled. Innocent or sinister? Bertagna, who is no newcomer to police work, says who doesn't come back and help a baby when they know one has fallen out of a truck?

Detectives were back out this morning knocking on doors. Last time I checked in it didn't seem they were making much progress. If you have any information call Santa Ana Police. The number straight to detectives is 714-245-8390.
