Woman shoots self while hiding gun in police cruiser

A woman who under arrest in the back of a Chicago Police cruiser accidentally shot herself Saturday evening while trying to conceal a handgun from officers.

The 20-year-old woman was placed under arrest in the 3400 block of South Wentworth Avenue about 5 p.m. by officers patrolling the Armour Square neighborhood, police said.

The officers – who are male – were waiting for a female officer to conduct a search of the woman before taking her to police lockup.

Police said the gun, which the woman had concealed on her body, discharged as she attempted to hide the weapon in the officer's cruiser.

She was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital with not life-threatening injures, police said.

Charges against her are pending.
