Meadowlark Energy of Ann Arbor has launched a pilot project in Southgate called the "Green Anchors" program. The company is flipping three abandoned or foreclosed homes and, using grant money, is fixing them up using top-of-the-line energy efficient equipment.

"It's a neighborhood here the housing stock is probably 50-60 years old minimally and we want to make sure it's retrofitted and brought back to the market," says Southgate Mayor Joseph Kuspa.

He tells Fox 2 the city partnered with the Michigan Suburbs Alliance, a nonprofit group based in Ferndale, to get grants for this project.

"The monthly bill will be about 60 bucks for energy consumption, so that's quite incredible!" he shares.

How can I cut costs in my own home?

Experts say, start small by switching to compact fluorescent or LED light bulbs. Then, consider a home energy audit to help you map out a plan.

This rehab project is expected to be completed the beginning of 2014 and, at first, the home will be offered for rent.

"Our goal is to reach out to low income individuals and provide them with the resources once they move in to be champions for energy efficiency and sustainability in their neighborhood," says Jennifer Young from Michigan Suburbs Alliance.

The application process is still being finalized. But whoever's chosen will be expected to teach their neighbors about energy efficiency.
