Sex Shop Closes In Chester County

Dr. Jill McDevitt, owner of Feminique Boutique, isn't happy.

"I feel persecuted," McDevitt said.

She says the wares at her sex shop are just too racy for the Chester County suburb--leading to what she calls a history of harassment from borough officials. So after five years in business she's decided to close the store.

"I feel there is a crusade against sex and anything that is sexual is bad," McDevitt said.

Borough Manager Ernie McNeely says there's no crusade against the store.

He says one recent notice in five years to remove a window display depicting sexual activity is far from harassment, but Dr. Jill claims that's not all she's endured.

She says the unfair treatment started with her fight to open the store five years ago. One of her most recent hurdles is putting up a new sign.

"It has the female form and a heart which is supposed to symbolize femininity as well as discretion," McDevitt said.

The Borough Manager sent us a copy of the conditional use agreement Dr. Jill agreed to saying all signs and advertising will not portray human private parts. But the 28-year-old sexologist doesn't agree with what it says.

"For a while, I followed it but then I started realizing that the definition of sex activity started to mean hearts and mannequins."

Soon the mannequin's in the store will be gone and with them a sex shop where Dr. Jill says West Chester University students can intern for college credits and get help on their homework.

She plans to shut her doors November 30, 2013. But she'll still have an online store and will continue doing sex education tours across the country.
