UGA launches $2.2 million hiring initiative

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) - The University of Georgia has launched a $2.2 million initiative to create 16 new interdisciplinary faculty positions.

UGA President Jere W. Morehead said this week that the new positions will "address some of Georgia's most challenging issues by reaching across traditional academic boundaries."

Officials say 70 percent of the salaries for the President's Interdisciplinary Hiring Initiative will be funded through the Office of the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost.

The money will be used to pay for salaries, as well as one-time startup costs such as what may be required to equip laboratories.

The new faculty members will be working in areas including poultry health and production, digital humanities, biological imaging and brain mapping, emerging infectious diseases, housing for older adults, among others.
