ATLANTA (AP) - A wing of the Southern Co. is considering building new solar energy facilities in Georgia.

Southern Power has informed Georgia officials that it may bid to provide solar power to utility company Georgia Power. Both firms are subsidiaries of the Atlanta-based Southern Co.

Earlier this year, utility regulators required that Georgia Power add 525 megawatts of solar energy to an electric grid that serves nearly 2.4 million customers.

Atlanta Tea Party Patriots co-founder Debbie Dooley said she wants assurance that Georgia Power will not favor a bid from a member of its parent corporation.

State regulators will require that Southern Power and others bidder file their proposals through an independent evaluator who is not employed by Southern Co. The system is intended to prevent conflicts of interest.
