CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A man's death in the West Englewood neighborhood Monday has been classified as a homicide, police said.

Officers found the man unresponsive in a stairwell in the 5900 block of South Winchester Avenue about 3:30 p.m., police News Affairs Officer Amina Greer said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:45 p.m., a spokesman for the Cook County Medical Examiner's office said.

The man is thought to be in his 20s, but his identity remains unknown Monday evening, the medical examiner's office said.

Authorities would not say what might have caused his death. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday, the medical examiner's office said.

Area South detectives are conducting a homicide investigation, Greer said.
