Suspect shot at Melbourne police officer

A Melbourne Police officer was shot at on Tuesday morning while investigating a suspicious person near an abandoned home.

Approximately 12:59 a.m., Sgt. Brian Wical was patrolling Juanita Circle in Melbourne when he observed a person near the rear of a boarded-up residence. The officer stopped to investigate the situation when he spotted a male holding a handgun. Wical called to the subject who in turn fired shots at the officer who then returned fire at the suspect.

The suspect then ran toward the rear of the home and began to scale a wall that separates the residence from an apartment complex. The suspect was able to get over the wall and flee. Wical was not injured. It is unknown if the suspect was injured.

The suspect is described as a black male, in his late teens to early 20s, wearing camouflage shorts and having close cropped hair.

Wical is an 11-year veteran with the Melbourne Police Department.
