When bullied children turn to plastic surgery for help

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Dr. Frederick Lukash is with the Long Island Plastic Surgical Group. He specializes in operations for children and teens, everything from pinning back ears to removing moles.

Before surgery he asks his patients to draw pictures of how they see themselves: sad, ugly portraits often follow.

For many children, this self-portrait is can be associated with real-life bullying they're receiving. Lukash says more and more parents across the country are taking seriously a discussion about bullying and their kids.

According to the American Society for Plastic Surgeons, the number of cosmetic procedures for kids is up. But not everyone thinks that is a positive trend.

Dr. Nava Silton, a child psychologist, said that opting for surgery covers up a larger problem: a child's lack of self-confidence. She said that communities and parents need to work together to ensure that children are being treated well, that they're not being bullied.

Lukash, who has written a book on the subject, said that surgery is an important option.

It is hard to argue with the "after" photos in his library.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey could rescind a $1-a-year lease for a park-and-ride lot near the Lincoln Tunnel. The agency's chief of real estate and development told a committee Wednesday that it should change a deal made in 2012. Published reports have alleged that former Port Authority chairman David Samson voted to approve the lease even though his law firm did business with New Jersey Transit, which operates the park-and-ride lot.
