Village of Diamond takes heavy hit from violent storm

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Fifty-four miles southwest of Chicago, sitting on about 3 square miles of land with 2,500 residents is the village of Diamond, Illinois. This area was the hardest hit of the region.

A convenience store was hit hard, so were some trailer homes, but the brunt of the damage was in the Diamond Estates and Farmstone subdivisions.

Thirty to forty homes suffered major roof damage, with lots of blown out windows and lost siding.

Fortunately, only four people were hospitalized. One individual is in critical condition, and so far there are no known fatalities.

"I feel fortunate that no one died, I truly do feel fortunate...we received a lot of help from a lot of different people," said Mayor Terry Kernc.

As tornado sirens sounded 20 minutes prior to touchdown, about 30 young girls were in an above-ground metal structure in Diamond, practicing dance moves for an upcoming show. One of the youngsters shouted, "You can all come to my house," and the girls calmly got into their cars and headed for her home where they rode out the storm in her basement. Lisa Glisson had two daughters in that dance class.

Glisson, a town clerk, described the moment. "There was no panic... [the girls] have to get in the car, [they] have to go, and do this now."
