DETROIT (WJBK) -

Police in Detroit say a 14-year-old was injured after he touched a live electrical wire the morning after strong storms knocked down trees and power lines across the state.

Police say the boy was walking home with friends from Burns Elementary that was closed due to power outages when he grabbed the line.

Emergency crews responded to the corner of Lyndon and Lauder streets and were able to transport the boy to a local hospital where he is listed in critical condition.

The school principal and the assistant principal spotted the downed line earlier in the morning and called DTE. The principals were in the process of putting orange cones around the line when they saw the injured 14-year old.

Despite warnings from fire crews that a live wire could possibly still be under the child, they moved him out of harms way and started performing CPR until medics arrived.

"I care about every student. I saw him laying there and needed to help. I need to move him, revive him, get him breathing again," says Dwayne Richardson, principal at Burns Elementary.

The school's principal visited the boy and his family at Sinai Grace Hospital, where the victim was initially taken for treatment. He has since been transferred to Mott Children's Hospital at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Tuesday afternoon he remained in critical condition.

Sunday's storms left more than 600,000 homes and businesses across the state without power.
