National Guard Mom Surprises Daughter At Cheer Match

A Florida mom and National Guard service member surprised her children at a cheering match.

FOX's Robbin Simmons was there for the emotional and happy homecoming.

8-year-old Reina Thompson was showing off her skills at the Orange Bowl Youth Football Alliance Cheer and Dance Competitions at the University of Miami and what she got was more than just a trophy.

The 8-year-old and her brother surprised by their mom who is part of the Alabama national guard. She is returning home from serving in Guantanamo Bay.

Sergeant Thompson was showered with hugs by her children.

"I'm feeling very happy," Sgt. Thompson said. "I saw her in august for a brief moment but I've been gone since January so I saw her for 2 days in August."

It all came together thanks to Reina's cheerleading coaches. The duo, with the help of the Orange Bowl Committee made sure Sergeant Thompson could finally watch one of her daughter's competitions.

"She missed her mom all the time and she works so hard and practices so whenever she gets the chance to see her mom this is what the outcome is," Cheerleading Coach Felicia Tucker said.

The 8-year-old was barely able to contain her excitement performing in front of her mom for the very first time.

Reina did not forget about her father on this special day. He's also an army sergeant and left for duty 1 day before mom was sent to Guantanamo. He has not been home since but recently returned to his base at fort hood after serving in Afghanistan.

"One more thing....if my dad watches this, I forgot to tell him happy birthday so happy birthday daddy," Reina said.
