Police and firefighters get in the ring for a good cause

ATLANTA -

Fighters take to the scale Thursday to weigh-in for a huge boxing event that will draw hundreds. The event is called the Mayors Cup and competitors will duke it out for a good cause.

On a crisp November day, as the sun starts to rise, their training is in session. Their boots laced, wrists wrapped and gloves are on. The fighters in the ring this day are working on strategy. But what makes the competitors unique is that when they are not in the ring preparing to knock each other out, they are colleagues, protecting each other and protecting us.

"They are heroes. These firefighters and police officers are heroes," said Atlanta Fire Deputy Chief Randall Slaughter.

On Friday, they will go head-to-head for a good cause in the annual Mayor's Cup Amateur Boxing fundraiser. It is police versus firefighters in a series of boxing matches to raise money for after-school and summer programs for Atlanta's youth.

"This is really about young people. It's about making sure that young people have an alternative outlet with their energy so they can get out here and do some something positive and ultimately be great citizens for our city," said Atlanta Police Chief Turner.

But just because it is for a good cause, doesn't mean there is not a little healthy competition. Trash talking and all, the kids who benefit from the program will attend the fundraiser, looking up at the men and women, not only as great boxers, but also as the people who their lives on the line for all of us every day.

So, in the end, it doesn't really matter which organization claims victory because the real winners are the kids.

The Mayor's Cub Boxing fundraiser takes place Friday at 7 p.m. at the Atlanta Civic Center. Tickets are still available. They start at $10. All proceeds go to the Atlanta Police Athletic League's youth programs.

We already know about some of the fees our banks charge -- the monthly fee, the overdraft charge, out-of-network and minimum balance fees. That's standard stuff. But did you know that the average checking account has 30 fees attached?
