Ventra system under review after problematic rollout

CHICAGO (Associated Press) -

A public transit oversight body has ordered an inquiry into Chicago's problem-plagued rollout of the new Ventra fare card system.

Regional Transportation Authority Chairman John Gates Jr. ordered the audit Wednesday into what he called the system's "systemic failure."

The Chicago Sun-Times reports that the review, in particular, will investigate whether the problems are costing the Chicago Transit Authority revenue or affecting its budget.

The problems have included malfunctioning fare readers that forced the CTA last week to hand out more than 15,000 free rides.

Some riders also say they've been double-billed and have complained about the quality of customer service and difficulty activating their cards.
